What is SBI PO?

State Bank of India recruits its Probationary Officers through its own exam, separate from IBPS. SBI PO is among the most sought-after bank jobs because of higher starting pay, faster promotions and SBI's size. The notice usually comes out in the middle of the year and the full process takes about six months.

Eligibility

Education: a degree in any discipline. Final-year students can apply if they will have the degree by the date given in the notice (30.09.2026 for this cycle).

Age: 21 to 30 years as on 01.04.2026. Relaxation: OBC 3 years, SC/ST 5 years, PwBD 10 to 15 years depending on category, and ex-servicemen 5 years.

Attempts: General and EWS candidates get 6 attempts, OBC candidates 9, and SC/ST candidates have no limit.

Exam pattern

Phase I (Prelims): 100 questions for 100 marks in 1 hour: English Language (40), Quantitative Aptitude (30) and Reasoning Ability (30). About ten times the number of vacancies, category-wise, are called for Mains.

Phase II (Mains):

Test Questions Marks
Reasoning & Computer Aptitude 40 60
Data Analysis & Interpretation 30 60
General/Economy/Banking Awareness 60 60
English Language 40 20
Objective total (3 hours) 170 200
Descriptive (letter and essay, 30 min) 2 30

Each wrong answer in the objective tests costs one-quarter of the marks for that question.

Phase III: a psychometric test, a group exercise (20 marks) and an interview (30 marks), for 50 marks in total.

The final merit list gives 75% weight to Phase II and 25% to Phase III.

Salary and service terms

Probationary Officers join Junior Management Grade Scale-I with a starting basic pay of ₹48,480 plus four advance increments. SBI puts the total cost to company at about ₹21.97 lakh a year in Mumbai, depending on place of posting. Selected candidates serve two years of probation and sign a service bond of ₹2 lakh for three years.
