What is SSC MTS?
The SSC Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) exam fills Group C non-technical posts in central government offices, such as peon, daftary, chowkidar and safaiwala. The same exam also recruits Havaldars for the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). It needs only a Class 10 pass and is held once a year. The 2025 cycle is the latest; the next notice is expected in the SSC calendar for 2026–27.
Eligibility
Education: Class 10 (matriculation) pass from a recognised board.
Age: 18 to 25 years for MTS, and 18 to 27 years for Havaldar and some MTS posts. For the 2025 cycle the age was counted on 01.08.2025. Reserved categories get the usual relaxation (OBC 3 years, SC/ST 5 years, PwBD 10 years).
Exam pattern
The computer-based exam has two sessions on the same day. Both must be attempted.
| Session | Subjects | Questions | Marks | Time | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Session I | Numerical & Mathematical Ability (20), Reasoning & Problem Solving (20) | 40 | 120 | 45 min | None |
| Session II | General Awareness (25), English Language (25) | 50 | 150 | 45 min | 1 mark |
Session I has no negative marking, so attempt every question there. Session II deducts 1 mark per wrong answer.
Havaldar physical tests
Havaldar candidates also face a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST):
- Walking: 1,600 metres in 15 minutes for men; 1 km in 20 minutes for women.
- Height and chest (men): 157.5 cm height and 81 cm chest when fully expanded, with a minimum expansion of 5 cm.
- Height and weight (women): 152 cm and 48 kg.
These tests are qualifying only. MTS candidates do not take any physical test.
Salary
Both MTS and Havaldar posts are at Pay Level 1, with a starting basic pay of ₹18,000 plus dearness allowance, HRA and transport allowance. MTS staff can later move to LDC posts through departmental exams.
