What is SSC GD Constable?
SSC GD (General Duty) Constable is one of the largest recruitments in India. It fills constable posts in the Central Armed Police Forces (BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP and SSB), the Secretariat Security Force (SSF) and Rifleman posts in Assam Rifles. Only a Class 10 pass is needed, which is why lakhs of candidates apply every year. The notice usually comes out in November or December and the computer-based exam follows a few months later.
Eligibility
Education: Class 10 (matriculation) pass from a recognised board.
Age: 18 to 23 years. For the 2026 cycle the cut-off date was 01.01.2026. The usual relaxations apply for SC, ST, OBC and ex-servicemen as listed in the notice.
Exam pattern
The computer-based exam (CBE) has 80 questions for 160 marks and lasts 60 minutes.

Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. The paper is offered in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages. NCC certificate holders get bonus marks: 5% of the maximum marks for a C certificate, 3% for B and 2% for A.
Physical tests
Candidates who clear the CBE go to the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST), conducted by the CAPFs.
- Race: male candidates must run 5 km in 24 minutes; female candidates must run 1.6 km in 8½ minutes. Candidates from Ladakh have separate standards (1.6 km in 7 minutes for men, 800 m in 5 minutes for women).
- Height: 170 cm for male and 157 cm for female candidates, with relaxations for certain regions and communities.
- Chest (male): 80 cm, with a minimum expansion of 5 cm.

Salary
Constables are placed at Pay Level 3, with a basic pay of ₹21,700. Allowances such as dearness allowance, HRA and force-specific allowances are added, along with free ration or ration money and medical cover.
