What is PM-KISAN?
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a Central Sector scheme, fully funded by the Government of India, that has been running since 1 December 2018. It gives income support of ₹6,000 a year to land-holding farmer families, paid in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 straight into the farmer's bank account.
According to the official portal, the 23rd instalment was released on 20 June 2026. The portal shows payment periods as April–July, August–November and December–March.
Who can get it
- Land-holding farmer families. For this scheme a family means husband, wife and minor children.
- The state government or UT administration identifies eligible families as per the scheme guidelines. A farmer cannot get the money just by registering; the state must verify the land records.
- eKYC is mandatory for every registered farmer. It can be done with an Aadhaar OTP on the portal, or through biometric eKYC at a CSC, on the PM-KISAN mobile app or with a state-authorised user.
Who cannot get it (exclusions)
The scheme guidelines exclude families of higher economic status, including:
- All institutional land holders.
- Former and present holders of constitutional posts, ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs, mayors of municipal corporations and chairpersons of district panchayats.
- Serving or retired officers and employees of central or state government, PSUs, autonomous bodies and regular employees of local bodies. Multi-Tasking Staff, Class IV and Group D employees are not excluded.
- Retired pensioners with a monthly pension of ₹10,000 or more (again excluding MTS/Class IV/Group D).
- Anyone who paid income tax in the last assessment year.
- Doctors, engineers, lawyers, chartered accountants and architects registered with professional bodies and practising.
Why your instalment may be on hold
The department has flagged cases that may fall under the exclusions and has temporarily withheld payments until physical verification. The examples it gives are farmers who acquired land after 1 February 2019, and families where more than one member (for example husband and wife, or an adult and a minor) was getting the benefit. If your payment has stopped, check Know Your Status on the portal first.
Documents you will need
The registration form asks for your Aadhaar number, a bank account (preferably Aadhaar-seeded), a mobile number and your land details (as recorded in state land records). Keep a copy of your land record ready for verification.
How to apply
- Go to the PM-KISAN portal and open New Farmer Registration in the Farmers Corner.
- Choose rural or urban farmer, enter your Aadhaar number and mobile number, and verify with OTP.
- Fill in your state, district, bank details and land details, and submit.
- Your state government verifies the application and land records. You can follow it under Status of Self Registered Farmer.
- Complete eKYC. Without it the instalment is not released.
You can also register through a Common Service Centre (CSC).
How to check status and other services
The Farmers Corner on the official portal offers Know Your Status, Beneficiary List (village-wise), Update Mobile Number, Update Missing Information, State Transfer Request, Voluntary Surrender and Online Refund. The Kisan eMitra chatbot also answers status questions.
Help
Use the Helpdesk – Query Form on the portal, or search your Point of Contact (POC) in the Farmers Corner to reach the officer in your area.
Important
Beware of fraud: the government never asks for money, an OTP or your bank PIN over the phone to release a benefit. Apply only on the official portal or at an authorised centre, and never pay an agent to "get your name added".
Rules, amounts and dates can change and may differ by state. Always confirm on the official portal before applying.
