Two low-cost insurance schemes, explained together
The Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) were both launched in May 2015 under the Jan Suraksha programme of the Ministry of Finance. Both are one-year covers that renew every year, with the premium auto-debited from your bank account. Many people take both, because they cover different risks.
| PMJJBY (life cover) | PMSBY (accident cover) | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual premium | ₹436 | ₹20 |
| Age to join | 18–50 years | 18–70 years |
| Cover | ₹2 lakh on death from any cause | ₹2 lakh for accidental death or full disability; ₹1 lakh for partial disability |
| Waiting period | Non-accidental death in the first 30 days of enrolment is not covered; accidental death is covered from day one | None stated |
| Cover period | 1 June to 31 May, renewed every year | One year, renewed every year |
Figures are from the Press Information Bureau note of 23 April 2026 and the scheme rules on jansuraksha.gov.in. As of February 2026, PMJJBY had 26.88 crore gross enrolments with 10,45,450 claims paid, and PMSBY had 57.11 crore enrolments with 1.76 lakh claims paid.
Joining PMJJBY late in the year: pro-rata premium
The PMJJBY rules let you join at any time, but the cover year always ends on 31 May, so the premium depends on when you join:
| Month you join | Premium |
|---|---|
| June, July, August | ₹436 |
| September, October, November | ₹342 |
| December, January, February | ₹228 |
| March, April, May | ₹114 |
After that, the full ₹436 is auto-debited each year for the June–May cover. Once you have joined, PMJJBY cover can continue up to age 55 as long as you renew every year, though you cannot join after 50. You can be covered through only one account. If premiums are taken from several accounts, the cover is still limited to ₹2 lakh.
Who can join
- PMJJBY: anyone aged 18 to 50 with a bank or post office savings account who consents to auto-debit.
- PMSBY: any savings bank account holder aged 18 to 70 who consents to auto-debit.
- Aadhaar is the main KYC document for the account.
Who is not covered
- People outside the age limits.
- Under PMJJBY, death from a non-accidental cause within the first 30 days of joining.
- If your account doesn't have enough balance on the auto-debit date, the policy can lapse. See the rules for when and how it can be revived.
Documents required
A savings bank account (with Aadhaar-based KYC), the scheme's consent-cum-declaration form, and nominee details.
How to enrol
- Go to the bank or post office branch where you have a savings account, or use the bank's internet banking or mobile app if it offers the option.
